New Year's resolutions often start with weight loss goals. I think in 2024 we know enough to shift the emphasis to long term health vs. short term goals. As tempting as it is to look good, it's more about feeling good. That means more fresh food, increasing movement and reducing body fat.
Diets are all about cutting down - remove sugar, remove fat, remove carbs. Of course, if you remove something, it will result in energy deficit and you will lose some weight. Will it be long term? Probably not. You might miss the sugar, the fat, or the carbs. Unless medically necessary, forget about restriction and let's change the focus to addition. I call this approach "outcrowding with the good".
Instead of cutting down on what someone told you is "bad for you", focus on adding more of nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables - high in vitamins, antioxidants and fiber (and often conveniently low in calories). The more fruits & veggies in your diet, the less room for foods that may be high in saturated fats, quick sugar or other empty calories. I am not suggesting you give any food you like - just adding more of the fresh fruits & veggies. Your body will feel the difference in your mood, energy levels, sports performance, you might even get that healthy glow!
