Vacation fitness: Moving without pressure

vacation fitnessI am a big believer that vacation is a time to restore, recharge and relinquish any usual commitments. If you are consistently exercising throughout the year, vacation can be the perfect opportunity to take a true break. Unless your vacation lasts longer than 3 weeks, you are unlikely to lose muscle or significantly reduce cardiovascular fitness. In fact, taking a pause often helps your body rebuild and come back stronger.
But what if you aren’t exercising much right now?
Vacation can still be a great chance to move your body gently, naturally, and without pressure. Not to “get in shape,” but to feel better in your body, enjoy your surroundings, and return home feeling less stiff and more energized. Think of vacation fitness as movement that fits into your trip, not workouts you have to plan around it.
Here are a few simple, approachable ways to stay active on vacation.

Walk Everywhere (and Anywhere)

Vacation is a great opportunity to explore. Whether you do it on a bike or on foot, you will cover some ground and keep your heart healthy. Aim to add more steps while you have this opportunity.
Walking might be the most underrated form of exercise and vacation is the perfect time for it. Exploring a new place naturally encourages movement without feeling like exercise.

  • Walk to a coffee shop instead of driving
  • Take the scenic route back to your hotel
  • Walk the length of the beach, pier, or town square
  • Wander without a destination

Even short walks add up. More importantly, walking boosts circulation, reduces stiffness from travel, and often leaves you feeling more energized.

Try Something New for Fun

Vacation often presents an opportunity to get outside, so explore with different active options. Keeping your body active will only contribute to a more enjoyable vacation. Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to be good at an activity for it to “count.”

Consider:

  • Golf or Miniature golf
  • Pickleball or tennis
  • Paddle-boarding or kayaking
  • Beach volleyball
  • Bike rentals
  • Guided walking tours

Trying something new engages both your body and your brain, which makes movement feel less like a chore and more like play.

Water for the Win

Of course, your vacation could take you to a cold destination, but if you are seeking the sun, find a pool, lake, river or ocean. If your vacation includes water, take advantage of it. Swimming, floating, or even wading provides gentle resistance that works your muscles without stressing your joints.
Even more importantly, being in the water has incredible benefits for your mental well-being. The soothing, cool nature of water contributes to your overall relaxation.

Benefits that go beyond fitness:

  • Helps relieve tension
  • Supports mental relaxation
  • Improves circulation
  • Encourages deep breathing

You don’t need laps or a stopwatch. Just being in the water is enough.

Short Movement Moments Matter

You don’t need an hour-long workout to feel better. A few minutes of movement sprinkled throughout the day can make a big difference.
A few suggestions:

  • Stretch when you wake up or before bed
  • Do a few mobility movements on the balcony or hotel floor
  • Stand up and move around after long meals or travel
  • Play with kids or pets
  • Dance while getting ready (or whenever you get a chance!)
  • Think “often and easy,” not “hard and intense.”

Where’s the gym? (Optional, Not Required)

Sometimes it’s fun to actually check out the gym on vacation. You might find new equipment, a machine you haven’t used before, or practice your routine in a new setting. A new environment can make movement feel fresh. But this is not a requirement for a healthy vacation.
If gyms feel intimidating, skip it. Walking, swimming, and daily movement are more than enough. Fitness isn’t about where you move, it’s that you do, in a way that feels good to you.

Leave Room for Rest

Rest is part of fitness too. Some days your body may want movement; other days it may need stillness. Listen to that.
The goal of vacation fitness isn’t to come home “in better shape”. It’s to come home feeling refreshed, capable, and ready to ease back into your routine.
